Fredericton Bluegrass & Oldtime Music Association

The Fredericton Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association recently celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary. It was established in 1981 for the purpose of promoting Bluegrass, country and traditional music. Jam sessions are held at the Johnson Avenue Seniors Center on the first and third Sundays of every month, with the exception of July and August. We are all amateurs and love to play music solely for enjoyment. Our longevity can be attributed to the fact that we provide an outlet for listening to and playing down-home traditional music. We try to create a down home, toe-tapping, kitchen party atmosphere in which everyone is made to feel welcome, listeners as well as amateurs.

A campout is held each July at the Sunbury-Oromocto Park (506-357- 3708) There will be lots of music on stage as well as impromptu jam sessions throughout the weekend. The campground provides all accommodations as well as a playground and a wonderful lake. I have been involved with the club from its inception and have filled all executive positions at one time or other. I have a reverence for traditional southern (Old-Time) music. However, as president, my goal is to welcome anyone who appreciates any aspect of bluegrass or country music to come along. I want to make everyone feel involved. I particularly want to encourage the reluctant musician to join in the jam sessions.

The bluegrass club has two pot luck dinners per year. We are considering providing a free Christmas meal for all members this year. Recently the club made a financial contribution to the Fort McMurray disaster. I feel that our contribution to the Fredericton community, over the years has been in providing an outlet for people on a Sunday afternoon and hear some “Real” music. They are looking for something meaningful to fill the void. We all know that television just doesn’t cut it…
