I am but one (there’s a song in there somewhere). This is the band issue and I would like to note that I was more than disappointed in the response from bands. In the previous publication I announced that the band issue would be completed in October/November and all bands were to submit their information & picture as indicated in the precedent provided. Well, only 4 bands did so! This is rather disappointing considering the fact that the fans and members of BMAC have stressed to me how much they en- joy the bands issue. As a result of this, some of the infor- mation may not be accurate. On a much happier note, this will be my final issue as Publi- cation Editor—I’m handing over the reigns. I’ve been the Editor now for several years and think we need new blood, with new ideas. Once it has been announced we will certainly pass on the contact info—for now however you can continue to submit your articles or comments to me at lschad- bourn@gmail.com. JERRY MURPHY: Finally Recognized For Music Promotion On September 14, 2013 Jerry Murphy was in- ducted in the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall Of Fame as a builder. This was a well deserved honor as Jerry does more to promote bluegrass, country and gospel music than anyone else in eastern Cana- da. Before moving to Nova Scotia in 1992 Jerry was heavily involved in music in his native New Bruns- wick with the South Eastern New Brunswick Blue- grass & Oldtime Music Association. Jerry has been involved in the Downeast Bluegrass & Oldtime Mu- sic Society as director, treasurer, vice-president and president. This organization holds the oldest blue- grass festival in Canada known as the Annual Nova Scotia Bluegrass & Oldtime Music Festival and also the Eastern Canada Bluegrass Music Awards. In November 1992 Jerry started the East Hants Blue- grass & Oldtime Music Association and has been president most of its 21 years. Jerry has been mas- ter of ceremonies at practically every bluegrass and oldtime music festival in the Maritimes and has won the MC of the year award and Master award at the annual Eastern Canada Bluegrass Music Awards. After winning any award five years the recipient is no longer eligible and is given a Master’s Award. He has also won the Promoter category five times and has his Masters. He has also received volunteer recognition from the Municipality of East Hants. In 2003 Jerry started the Milford Coffeehouse and has had all the local entertainers over the years as many well known acts. He has also given many their first chance to appear before a public audience and he deserves much thanks for doing so. If no- body was willing to do this there would be no future entertainers. Every winter Jerry organizes a country and western jamboree as part of the Milford Recreation Winter Carnival. He also often does the sound or MC’s for other events in the community. Many times on short notice he has hosted the Bluegrass & Country Jamboree TV show on Milford Channel 10. For many years Jerry and his wife Bernice have taken a promotion stand to the festivals displaying flyers for all the upcoming music events. He spends countless hours on his website Jerry’s News where he features Upcoming Events, Items Of Interest, Buy And Sell, Yearly Event Calendar, etc. Though Jerry was inducted in the hall of fame as a builder it should be noted he is one of the top harmonica players in the area. He has appeared on nearly all the local jamborees as well as the coffee- houses and the local TV Bluegrass & Country show. Slocan Ramblers cut their teeth at the Cloak and Dagger Pub where a weekly gig turned these four pickers into a functioning bluegrass unit slicker than Rob Ford's noggin. The instrumentation and careful arrange- ments on this album are the result of two years worth of recording, editing, mixing and mastering produced by mandolin magi- cian Andrew Collins. Wild Bill Jones takes a quicker turn on this record with a slightly different arrangement than one would ex- pect, but the band really makes it work. Seeing this band live is incredible as all are fine, fine players and singers in their own right. Adrian Gross on mandolin, Frank Ev- ans on three-finger and clawhammer banjo, Darryl Poulsen on guitar, and Alastair Whitehead on bass. If you are reading this magazine right now, you probably like bluegrass music, at least a little bit. And if you are also reading this and are in Toronto and have never heard of this group, you need to drop everything and check their next show in town. TIM’S CD REVIEWS— Winnipegger Tim Osmond does his absolute darnedest to surround himself with music at all times. You can even catch him at his desk at Home Routes picking a banjo to the backing-up beep of the dumptruck outside his window. (It’s an ‘F’ for all you string nerds out there). As well as being the Ar- tistic Director/co-founder of Home Routes (www.homeroutes.ca) and an accomplished bluegrass banjo player, he also hosts “Sunday Drive”, a weekly bluegrass/old-time radio show on CJUM 101.5 at the University of Manitoba. Bands releasing a new cd are encouraged to submit copies of their works to the DJ’s listed in this publication, and to Archives Canada. The current edition of the band consists of Den- nis Douthwright on mandolin, son Shane on guitar, Shane’s wife Nadine (Poirier) Douth- wright on acoustic bass, and Michel Pellerin on five string banjo. Shane does most of the lead singing, while Dennis Contributes in that de- partment as well. The senior band member, Dennis, has been in- volved in a bluegrass band since 1992, when he formed Demoiselle Creek. Son Shane joined this band in 1993, and continued through 1999, when the band disbanded. At that time Dennis was approached by Ron Gaudet to join his Moncton area band, Special Edition. Soon after, Shane joined this band as well, and by the year 2004, Shane’s wife Nadine came on board play- ing bass. Shortly after that, Ron Gaudet, who played ban- jo, departed, leaving Dennis, Shane and Nadine, who carried on as The Douthwrights. At that point they conducted a search for a banjo play- er, and found Andrew Conde, who was a first timer in any bluegrass band. The new band name made sense, as Dennis and Shane had released a mandolin and guitar duo instrumental recording in 2003 as The Douth- wrights. Within a couple of years after this new band was assembled, another Douthwrights re- cording appeared, titled “Bluegrass Uncovered”, featuring a mix of vocals and instrumentals. In the interim, a number of banjo players have come and gone, due to family or work issues. Michel Pellerin, who is currently looking after the banjo duties, is also a first timer with a bluegrass band. He is quickly becoming a sea- soned band member, not only instrumentally, but vocally as well, singing tenor when three part harmony is required. Shane has the distinction of winning the Male Vocalist of the Year Award in 2003 and 2004 at the Eastern Canada Bluegrass Awards Show in Truro, Nova Scotia. He is also a budding song writer, and the band is including some of his original material on their festival song lists, in addition to some songs that Dennis has penned. Dennis and Shane have appeared at some pres- tigious bluegrass festivals over the years, with either Special Edition, or as The Douthwrights. Some of these were The Blueberry Bluegrass Festival in Edmonton, Alberta, Tottenham in Ontario, and other events in Ontario, Quebec, and the New England States. At the present time The Douthwrights would be satisfied playing a maximum of four or five festi- vals per season due to family and work commit- ments. All band members have day jobs. Dennis is a fifty year veteran dry-waller, Shane teaches a Grade 12 class at Harrison Trimble High School in Moncton, Nadine works at a call cen- tre, and Michel manages a jewelry store in Richibucto, New Brunswick. Shane and Nadine are also parenting an eight and a ten year old. During the winter months The Douthwrights present concerts at the Magnetic Hill Lions Club hall on the outskirts of Moncton. This gives them an opportunity to work up new material for the festival season. According to Shane “these shows are a blast” In summing up, Shane states: “I am really appreciative of what blue- grass music has done for us. It has allowed us to travel to Alberta, and other places playing music. It is pretty amazing to be able to do that”. Page 8 Page 25 The Slocan Ramblers started turning heads in early 2009 while playing casual gigs on the To- ronto roots scene. With a weekly local pub gig becoming a staple of the city’s thriving acoustic music scene, the Slocans quickly earned a repu- tation throughout Canada for their energetic live performances, impressive musicianship and un- canny ability to convert anyone that stands in their path into a fan. Though the Slocans have moved far beyond their bar room roots, with career highlights including standing ovations at the legendary Mariposa Folk Festival, an opening show for Steve Martin on the main stage at Toronto Jazz Fest, and a West Coast tour, the raw intensity and drive forged in their years in the bar continues to set them apart. With their debut album “Shaking Down the Acorns” receiving wide acclaim (Sing Out! Maga- zine, Huffington Post etc…) and a sophomore re- lease in the works, this fearless four piece is sure to keep garnering attention beyond the tradition- al bluegrass fan-base.
