Want to get more gigs? BMACC is Press kits are a vital tool in this, our music industry and for most now organizing BAND SWAP. Bands and clubs can now sign-up media at large. Getting gigs is somewhat of a highly competitive with us, if they are interested in playing, or hosting bands from process, and having a press kit can be the deciding factor. other areas. Again, having a press kit conveys the message of professional- ism. Clubs looking for fresh talent, to come in and open for other bands, or to be featured in a concert .. . this is an important refer- ence tool for you. These bands are keen to play, and it is a great fit! Listening to the same musicians, play the same old songs, over and over again, is okay for jamming, but can soon grow stale. There are many bands out there, with new, original music, that are keen and eager to play at your club. It is sometimes difficult for new bands to get recognized ... especially if they only play locally, or at just a few festivals each year. BAND SWAP is an opportunity that will give bands the chance to play further afield, and to get their names and music out in front of new audiences, in other locales. We are now taking contact info. from bands and clubs, in order to connect the two. Want to organize a house concert? That is fine too. How do you sign-up? We will have a sign-up sheet at the BMACC table, at the Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards, Nov. 26, 27 and 28. Our chairperson for this is Murray Hale, a dedi- cated BMACC volunteer, and he can be reached at murrayha!e@hotmai!.com or you can communicate with me at the contact info. in this publication. For bands, your most effective promotional tool is your press kit. It represents what you look like, what you sound like, and gives the appearance of professionalism. Some press-kit templates are available completely online, (electronic press kit or EPK) such as Sonicbids. However, in this world of cyberspace, where things can be deleted at the stroke of a computer key, I believe it is bet- ter to put something tangible in the hands of promoters, festival organizers, media personnel, to name a few. You can always lead them to your websiJe from there. If you want to get more gigs and exposure, regularly update your press kit! Now, I suppose, if you wanted to set something-up, you could call-up a promoter or festival organizer on the phone and say, "Hey, we'd like to play there," but 99 percent of the time, the person on the other end is going to say "Send me some- thing." Page 2 Your press kit should include: -Cover letter -5X7 glossy black & white photo -Short bio -Hype sheet or one-sheet (with review quotes, awards, etc.) -Business card or contact info. -Hardcopy sample of your music, and links (website, youtube, etc.) At music conferences such at OCFF or IBMA World of Bluegrass, or the Central Canada Bluegrass Music Awards, a press kit is a necessity. Music is a business! Approach it as such ... well, only if you want to move beyond recreational jamming. Please re- member to prudently follow-up with those who you've given your press kit to, but do not pester them. If you are releasing a new CD, it is important to provide the media with information from your press kit. Just a one-sheet or hype- sheet with suggested sampling is often enough. (Be sure to in- clude contact information.) There are three views you are looking for: preview, interview, and review. If you cannot afford to hire a publicist, it is wise to learn how to write a press release. Also be sure to send your release to genre appropriate radio shows and relevant media. BMACC can help you with that. Sonicbids is one website to help you build an Electronic Press Kit, and I quite liked the gig calendar; however, I found spending money to apply for gigs a complete rip-off. I have also heard good things about Taxi, but again ... each transaction costs you. Be sure to go to www.bmacc.ca to get the latest on event listings, and band information, and be sure to make plans to attend the Music Biz 101 seminar we are hosting at the Central Canadi- an Bluegrass Music Awards at Deerhurst, featuring Gary Hubbard. Warm regards from Bluegrass Central, Denis Chadbourn Rhyme'n'Reason Bluegrass & Gospel Band The group consists of veteran Bluegrass musicians -Stefan Van Holten- banjo and vocals; Doug Moerschfelder-lead vo- cals and, Guitar; and Bill Koop-mandolin and vocals. When Randy Pierson, country bassist, joined the group in April 2008, Rhyme 'n' Reason was formed. Their vocal skills and versatili- ty on a number of stringed instruments as well as the dobro, harmonica and occasionally the mountain dulcimer, make all sorts of combinations possible, allowing them to develop the full repertoire that identifies bluegrass music. Their versatility and large repertoire has prompted requests for them to play for smaller crowds of a few dozen people in a little country church, to larger venues entertaining thousands at outdoor festivals. Rich close harmony, great dynamics, exciting instrumentals, humour and novelty songs are the hallmark of this versatile group, and have made them very popular. Because the guys believe their music should portray the priorities set by the "father of bluegrass", Bill Monroe, as well as reflect their own lifestyles, a sizable portion of their repertoire consists of gos- pel songs. Close attention to detail and a good sense of ap- propriateness combined with a natural spontaneity helps them to adapt to any venue. R'n'R was nominated for the first time in these 5 categories at the CCBA's (Central Canadian Bluegrass Awards) in 2009: LEAD SINGER-DOUG MOERSCHFELDER PROMISING GROUP RECORDING-THE GRASS LOOKS GREEN VOCAL GROUP & GOSPEL GROUP Rhyme'n'Reason may just be the busiest Bluegrass band around since arriving on the scene. Their first recording project 'THE GRASS LOOKS GREEN' received great reviews, en- couraging them to return to the studio to start recording a gos- pel CD which they hope to have ready for early 2011. This CD will include many of the favourite songs that bluegrass fans love to hear. R'n'R has played at many Ontario Festivals and is now receiv- ing offers from Quebec and even from U.S. promoters. Bill is retired, but Stefan, Doug & Randy all have day jobs and continue to pursue what they love to do best "BLUEGRASS" .... and when asked about the Florida Festival on their agenda in November, they replied "Maybe we'll become snowbirds,.,. There is no doubt that Rhyme'n'Reason has captured their audience. This group of men, with their powerful harmonies and strong instrumentals have found the secret to a Bluegrass & Gospel band that will continue to keep crowds entertained for years to come. If you have access to a computer check out R'n'Rs website at: http:rhymenreasonbluegrass.shutterfly.com,. This site has lots of videos and pictures to enjoy. If you get a chance to see them in your area or at a festival ,you will not be disappointed - their use of a single mic is perfected to an art. This band is BLUEGRASS WITH CLASS!! Stefans's wife Diana & Doug's wife Cindy are also an integral part of this group!
