In these times of financial turmoil, people are searching for solid value when it comes to spending their hard-earned dollars. Wide fluctuations in the price of fuel, unpredictable exchange rates, and a volatile investment market I make it nigh impossible to find a good deal these days ... but you, yes you my intrepid bluegrasser ... you get top marks when it comes to intelligent spending! You are a consumer, who knows a good deal when you see one. The last time I went out for dinner or to see a live show, it cost me essentially the same amount of money, that is does to park my trailer for an entire entertainment-filled-long-weekend, at a bluegrass festival. In comparing value between the two, the evidence is overwhelmingly incontrovertible; and the verdict is ... BLUEGRASS FESTIVALS ARE THE BEST DEAL AROUND! Is it just me? Does this not seem like a no-brainer? When you consider the spin-off effect that even a smaller festival has on the local economy ... you'd think municipal and provincial levels of government would bend over backwards, to support these events. Music is an industry that has a spillover effect. The increase in sales that festivals bring to, both local businesses and on site vendors can sometimes mean the difference between feast or famine. This applies to bands, who need to sell their merchandise in order to subsidize their travelling expenses. It applies to volunteer fire departments and emergency response teams, who hold auctions or 50/50 draws, to buy life- saving equipment for the community they serve. Bluegrass festivals benefit literally dozens of charitable organizations that just need to pay the rent or keep their doors open. Demographically, the vast number of festival goers are retired, or semi-retired baby boomers, who are living on a fixed source of income. Finding activities that fit into their budget can often be challenging. A single show featuring a country headliner, costs about the same, as a 3 day pass to a bluegrass festival ... however, the latter includes camping, hydro, water, workshops, and various other activities, including unfettered access to the numerous musical artists. Plus ... you get to bring in your own beer ... (in a can of course). Most festivals have a great mix of entertainment...from headliners who play for a living, to members of the local bluegrass club just starting a band. Jamming at the grassroots level is no better education for an aspiring musician. The festival environment encourages non-pros to join in and jam with the pros ... this is an exhilarating learning experience that introduces us to new songs, new chops, better rhythm (hopefully) ... it is an educational opportunity that comes with the price of admission. So congratulations to you, for being so financially prudent. We now need to go forth, and expound the virtues of bluegrass festivals our friends, family and neighbors. This is one secret we need to share ... one secret that, if shared, will benefit us all.
