The Bluegrass Music Association of Canada Newsletter-Volume 2 Issue 2-April 2008 In an attempt to provide our membership with some additional benefit for their annual membership fee, the BMACC Board decided that we would hold regular draws for various items such as event tickets. In April, the Thames Valley Bluegrass Association donated two tickets for the May 3rd Rhonda Vincent Concert at the Centennial Hall in London. The draw was held on April 3rd at our regular Thursday night Jam Session. AND THE WINNER IS! James Young, 2237 Cameron Line, R.R. #3, Indian River, Ontario The winning ticket was drawn by Rikki Cameron of Woodstock, a new youth member of TVBA. www.bmacc.ca FESTIVAL ISSUE BOARD OF DIRECTORS President-Wayne Uncer 519-469-3392 Vice-president -Denis Chad- bourn Home: 705-776-7754 Work: 705-474-2271 Secretary -Wes Lowe 519-539-8967 Treasurer - Roland Aucoin 905-635-1818 Directors at Large Cindy deBoer-Winterbottom Karen May Snell 705-788-4362 Steve Pritchard Gord de Vries 519-668-0418 Amanda-Lynn Stubley 519-642-7987 Donald Tarte 888-876-3369 Brother Brian Powley 613-374-3888 WHAT"S INSIDE Organizational Members List - Page 4 Bluegrass on the Radio - Page 6 Out Among the Stars - Page 7 New Festival Announcement-Page 10 Tottenham at 25 - Page 10 The Backstabbers-Page 11 A Matter of Trust-Page 17 Editorial-Page 20 BMACC at SPGMA-Page 21 Festivals in the Northern States-Page 22 Festivals 2008-Page 23 Northern Sons From the Membership Chair BMACC was 1 year old on March 31/08. Beard Guitars LLC and twelve time Grammy A ward winner Jerry Douglas announce an agreement to develop the Jerry Douglas Signature Resonator Guitar. Master luthier Paul Beard and resonator guitar virtuoso Jerry Douglas will develop an exclusive family of signature guitars, designed around Mr. Douglas's vision of sonic perfection. Mr. Douglas states, "From my first meeting with Paul Beard early in our careers, I hoped we would someday work together. With a combined knowledge of the resonator guitar we have, I believe, created an instrument which establishes the standard by which all resophonic guitars are to be measured for years to come". The premier examples of the Jerry Douglas Signature Resonator Guitar was unveiled at the Winter NAMM show, January 17-20, in Anaheim, CA and will be sold exclusively by Beard Guitars LLC and its network of dealers. Paul Beard is celebrated for twenty three years of resonator guitar design innovation. Grascals Present Cheque to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Award-winning bluegrass group The Grascals visited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital on February 4 and presented a check for $ 40, 184.60 on behalf of Musicians Against Childhood Cancer (MACC). The check represents the proceeds from the 2007 MACC benefit concert, as well as sales of the the CD, "Celebration of Life: Musicians Against Childhood Cancer." The Grascals have performed at the benefit concert each (Continu ed 011 page 8) BMACC Notes-April 2008 Page 7 (Continued from page 7) Out Among the Stars year since 2005, and they also contributed a song to the album. MACC was founded by concert promoter Darrel Adkins and his wife Phyllis in 2000 after their daughter, Mandy, lost her courageous battle with cancer. In 2001, the annual Bluegrass Classic festival promoted by Adkins Productions since 1984 was re-named Musicians Against Childhood Cancer. All of the bluegrass artists who perform at the festival donate their time in an effort to raise money for the fight against childhood cancer. Celebration of Life: Musicians Against Childhood Cancer was released in 2006 by MACC through Skaggs Family Records. It contains 3 7 performances by 136 bluegrass artists and musicians, recorded at the MACC benefit concert from 2000-2005. The album was International Bluegrass Music Association's 2006 Album of the Year. After presenting the check, The Grascals toured the hospital and visited with patients. "We're absolutely blown away by the courage of these kids and their families, and by the incredible research being done here," said Grascals vocalist/ guitarist Jamie Johnson. "We're honored to have been a small part of raising funds through MACC, and we're thankful to all the artists who have participated in this project." Bill Bolick -- the last surviving member of the Blue Sky Boys -- passed away March 13, 2008 in Hickory, North Carolina. He was 90 years old. The Bolicks (Blue Sky Boys) of Hickory, North Carolina cut some fine music during their day. I would highly recommend the multiple volume set (four eds released individually) on Copper Creek. They are very clean and clear recordings taken from radio shows from '46 and '47. Junior Sisk & Ramblers' Choice have inked a recording contract with Rebel Records. The Ferrum, Virginia based band consists of Sisk on guitar & lead vocals, Tim Massey on bass, Darrell Wilkerson on banjo, Chris Harris on mandolin, and Billy Hawks on fiddle. Both band and label are excited by the pairing. Says Sisk, "I've always wanted to record for Rebel. Now I feel like I've found a home." The straight-ahead, traditional bluegrass favored by the band is a perfect fit for the like-minded label. Mark Freeman of Rebel says that Sisk "is a strong singer with a solid band and we're looking forward to working with them." The upcoming album, produced by Ronnie Bowman and tentatively titled "Blue Side Of The Blue Ridge," is scheduled for a mid-summer release. www.juniorsiskandramblerschoice.com www.myspace.com/ juniorsiskramblerschoice New Gibson Brothers CD "Iron and Diamonds" The CD, on Sugar Hill Records, will be released to stores on April 8th. www.gibsonbrothers.com www.myspace.com/thegibsonbrothers Dr. Ralph, and now Dr. Ricky Ricky Skaggs will receive an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music located in Boston, Massachusetts. He will be honored during an upcoming Grand Ole Opry performance. Bluegrass Now Goes Green After 19 years of publishing an innovative and successful magazine in a traditional print format, May 2008 will be a landmark issue for Bluegrass Now, as we cease publication of our print edition and evolve as an equally innovative and totally electronic magazine. The decision comes after two years of researching marketing trends in the entertainment industry, amassing and studying data regarding the reading habits and preferences of consumers, consulting with a cross-section of major magazine publishers nationwide, and soliciting input from our current readership. Although this decision was initially quite difficult for a retired academic who has lived by the printed word for more than half a century, I am truly excited about being in the vanguard of multimedia publishing in the bluegrass community. The "new" Bluegrass Now will be like a giant mosaic. At first glance, its cover story, features, charts, reviews and regular columns will seem familiar, but as readers explore the site, they'll discover that our stories have been enhanced with audio and video clips. They'll be able to hear samples of songs when they read reviews, and invited to contribute their own reviews if they desire. Readers will be invited to participate in our new "Fans' Choice Music Chart," as they cast a vote for their favorite song and artist of the month. All ads will carry hyperlinks for additional information and connection. Our readers will be delighted by virtual tours of festival sites around the world that explore what makes each festival a unique cultural experience. While the new Bluegrass Now will be familiar and friendly with enhanced editorial content, unlike a printed magazine, it will not be static. New pieces will be added to the mosaic weekly, providing the reader with fresh points of interest and access to the latest news while they await next month's edition. Your subscription will provide the same informative stories, contributed by your favorite writers, and the "new" Bluegrass Now will provide a constant, dynamic flow of bluegrass news, updated weekly to keep you current with the music you love. To get a preliminary look at changes currently underway at Bluegrass Now, visit www.bluegrassnow.com. To access thee-magazine, log in with User ID Guest, password 1234. Deb, Caroline, Kate and I, and all of our contributors and staff, appreciate your friendship and enthusiasm as we enter this exciting new era in our magazine's history.
